Harmful effects of vaping being ignored by UK health authorities

English health authorities have been accused of ignoring the potential harms of vaping in the face of mounting evidence by a leading expert.Independence Day Sale

The endorsement of e-cigarettes by Public Health England (PFE) is “out of step” with other parts of the world, according to Professor Martin McKee of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

In the US, several states have launched campaigns to warn teenagers about the risks of nicotine addiction, and some areas – like San Francisco – have banned them outright. But PHE “seems to be doing everything it can to promote e-cigarettes” and choosing to ignore their risks, Mr McKee said.

“The nicotine in e-cigarettes is not a harmless drug and then there all these other things such as flavourings that are inhaled,” he told the Press Association. We haven’t had e-cigarettes for long enough to know the true effects”.

PHE has championed vaping as a quitting aid for smokers, claiming that it is 95 per cent safer than smoking. However there have been several studies, though few in humans, which show that high concentrations of the e-cigarette vapour, or particular ingredients, can damage the lungs.

“First of all, you’ve got to show that they’re safe,” Mr McKee said, arguing that “safer than cigarettes” was not a sufficient justification. He also warned there was no evidence “at the population level” that they were useful as a quitting aid.

The xafsing of nicotine-infused liquids in fruit flavours more commonly found in sweets and sugary drinks is another concern, with experts saying they are being “pushed very hard to children”.

This raises the chance of them becoming addicted to nicotine, and then exposed to an array of poorly studied chemicals – particularly if given the impression that vaping is safe.A report published by PHE in February said that regular use of e-cigarettes among young people remains low.

But its figures showed that the number of UK children and teenagers trying vaping has doubled in recent years.

Some 15.9 per cent of children aged 11 to 18 reported having tried vaping, according to 2018 data, a rise from 8.1 per cent in 2014.

E-cigarettes have become a new frontier for tobacco giants, with many promoting their own version of e-cigarettes or “smokeless” heat-not-burn tobacco products.

Banning e-cigarettes, not tobacco products

San Francisco's ban on electronic cigarettes is an "insane public policy," some public health experts say, arguing that the city should ban all tobacco products instead.

The criticism came after San Francisco on Tuesday became the first major city in the United States to ban e-cigarettes. The ban, which will go into effect 30 days after the mayor signs the ordinance, was approved by city supervisors who cited the "growing health epidemic of youth vaping" in their decision.Independence Day Sale

E-cigarette use has undeniably soared among youth, alarming public health officials: 20.8 percent of high school students reported in 2018 that they had used the vaping devices within the past 30 days, compared to 1.5 percent in 2011, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC says e-cigarettes are not safe for children and teens, but adds that they have "potential to benefit adult smokers who are not pregnant if used as a complete substitute for regular cigarettes and other smoked tobacco products."

Still, the long-term effects of vaping devices are unknown, particularly on youth who smoke them. They contain the addictive substance nicotine but far fewer of the toxins that combustible cigarettes have.

While e-cigarettes are generally understood to be less harmful than cigarettes or cigars, many parents, school administrators and pediatricians have expressed concern that the way e-cigarettes deliver nicotine is negatively affecting the development of teens' brains, particularly because they can deliver a higher dose more quickly than traditional cigarettes can.

VAPORESSO TARGET MINI 2 KIT

This review represents my own thoughts and not necessarily those of potv.
Included in the Vaperesso Target mini 2 kit is the Target 2, 5 - 50 watt, 2000 mah (built in cell) mod. The VM 22mm tank, 2 coils the 1ohm cell & 0.6 ohm mesh coil (both using the new tea fibre wicking). Spare glass for the tank plus spare o rings. High quality charging usb lead and the instructions plus guarantee, also a tool for coil changing.
I remember the original Target kit being very successful a few years back and visually the mark 2 is very similar and incredibly small.Independence Day Sale
The VM tank is a screw top top fill tank which has the option of changing the coil via the top with an included screw tool. I must admit, I've changed the coil conventionally via the bottom. Filling the tank is easy as the fill hole is large enough for all bottle nib sizes and fills easily without obstruction. The tank holds 2mls as per regulation. Airflow is supplied via a Cyclops collar that opens to reveal five small (about 1.5mm airflow holes) the collar is sturdy and accurate at fully shutting off any un required holes.
The mod packs the same version of the omni board 4.2 chipset that I've used before in the armour and tarrot mini. This is good news as it's an incredibly versatile board that is on the same level as the evolv and yihi boards.
You have every style of vaping covered from variable wattage, variable voltage (my favourite for straight mtl vaping), profiles for all popular tc wire types plus tcr for custom set ups, various boost profiles that can be customized and even bypass for mech style vaping. You've a clock face screen saver and the brightness is fully adjustable plus you get an economy setting to save as much power as possible.

Why 'juuling' has become a nightmare for school administrators

That’s their cue to reach quietly for a small, justfog vape sleek device they can easily conceal in their palms. It resembles a flash drive, but instead of computer files, this device stores nicotine.

They take a hit, sucking on the device as they would a cigarette. Then, “they blow into their backpacks … or into their sweater when the teacher isn’t looking,” said Elijah Luna, 16, a sophomore at Vista del Lago High School in Folsom, Calif., about 30 miles east of Sacramento. The vapor cloud is so small and dissipates so quickly that teachers are usually none the wiser, said Luna, who added he’s never tried it himself.

The device is a Juul, a popular electronic cigarette that’s a sensation among teens, especially in wealthier neighborhoods — and a nightmare for school administrators and public health advocates.

“I think this is going to be the health problem of the decade,” said Milagros Vascones-Gatski, a substance abuse counselor at Yorktown High School in Arlington, Va. In nearly 17 years working with teens, she said, she’s never seen a tobacco product become so popular so quickly. Three to four students are caught smoking e-cigs on campus each week, usually Juuls, and some are suspended, she said.

Vascones-Gatski, along with other concerned educators and health care experts, consider “Juuling” more than youthful rebellion. Because it is high in nicotine, they fear the devices are extremely addictive for this vulnerable population. To combat the spread of the devices, some schools have banned flash drives as well, to avoid any confusion between the items. Yorktown High even removed the main entrance doors from student bathrooms at the beginning of the school year to dissuade students from vaping inside. Despite these efforts, teens across America continue smoking the stuff in class, in hallways, in restrooms and at school sporting events.

Because it’s referred to as Juuling, not smoking or vaping, some students may think what they’re doing is harmless, said Pamela Ling, a professor at the University of California-San Francisco School of Medicine. “They may not even know it contains nicotine.”

But it does — and a significant amount. One Juul “pod,” the nicotine cartridge inserted into the smoking device and heated, delivers about 200 puffs, about as much nicotine as a pack of cigarettes, according to the product website.

Oldest egg fossil discovered inside ancient mama bird

Scientists have discovered the first fossil bird ever found with an egg preserved inside its body, a new study reports. To get more preserved egg, you can visit shine news official website.

The 110-million-year-old bird is a new species called Avimaia schweitzerae, which was discovered in northwestern China. The bird lived at the same time as the dinosaurs.

The discovery was a surprise to paleontologists: “We were not expecting anything interesting, but it turned out to be the first fossil bird ever found with an egg inside its body,” study lead author Alida Bailleul of China's Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology told National Geographic.

The finding is especially amazing because fully formed eggs typically only stay within an adult mama bird for about a day, according to Science magazine. But problems with the egg itself may have caused the bird's death due to "egg-binding." This happens when the egg becomes stuck inside the body, preventing the egg from being laid, and killing the mother bird, the study said. Egg-binding is a serious and lethal condition that is fairly common in small birds undergoing stress.

This condition still occurs in chickens and modern pet birds.

Yet despite being malformed, the egg is excellently preserved, including parts of the eggshell that are seldom seen in the fossil record, such as traces of the egg membrane and the cuticle,Overall, the scientists said this fossil provides more information about ancient reproduction than any other Mesozoic fossil bird yet discovered.

As for the species name, it means “mother bird” (Avimaia) and also honors paleontologist Mary Schweitzer (Schweitzerae).

Electric dreams in danger as funding dwindles for China's Tesla challengers

Last year, Wei Qing and his private equity investment team visited more than 20 Chinese electric vehicle manufacturing startups. The end result? They decided not to invest in any.To get more tesla subsidies, you can visit shine news official website.

“There are too many uncertainties from when a company tells a story in the early stage, to when it produces a sample car and raises funds, to the eventual mass production,” said Wei, managing director at Shanghai-based Sailing Capital.

Wei, who declined to name the EV makers his team visited, said he thinks only a few of them will survive. Sailing instead decided to invest in an EV parts supplier, he added.

His concerns reflect what bankers describe as increasingly tough funding times for Chinese EV makers which must jostle for attention in a crowded sector and produce convincing arguments about future profitability despite government cuts to EV subsidies and plans to phase them out.

Numerous setbacks plaguing Tesla Inc in its quest for sustained profitability as well as a dramatic slide in sales and problems with some cars at Chinese startup Nio Inc have also put investors on their guard.

This year, Chinese EV makers have raised just $783.1 million as of mid-June compared with $6 billion for the same period a year earlier and $7.7 billion for all of 2018, according to data provider PitchBook.

One Hong Kong-based banker said he had been approached by at least a dozen EV makers seeking new funds but had to pass on most of them as they were not able to set themselves apart from the crowd.Even fundraising efforts that have gotten off the ground are not moving as fast as EV makers would like.

“It is challenging,” said the banker who began working on one fundraising this year. “If you can get a meeting with investors, you can always tell a story, but some don’t even reply to your requests for a meeting.”Eager to curb smog and jump-start its own auto industry, China has said it wants so-called new energy vehicles (NEVs) - which also include hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell cars - to account for a fifth of auto sales by 2025 compared with 5% now.

Those ambitions have spawned a plethora of EV startups competing not just with each other, but also global automakers and Tesla, which plans to start production in China this year.About 330 EV firms are registered for some sort of subsidy, government data shows, although the number of more well established startups is much smaller, at around 50.

But amid criticism that some firms have become overly reliant on government funds, Beijing has reduced subsidies, raised the standards needed for vehicles to qualify and flagged they will end altogether after 2020.

That has led to sharp slowdown as vehicle prices rise. Sales of NEVs in May rose just 1.8% from a year earlier compared with 18.1% in April, and 62% growth for 2018.

Surviving in the current funding environment, requires much cost discipline, Daniel Kirchert, CEO at Nanjing-based EV maker Byton, told Reuters.

“Given the current situation, it is not enough for any startup to come up with good products and be fast to xafs. At least it’s equally important to manage cost. Not only fixed costs but variable cost,” he said.

Byton, which is backed by state-owned automaker FAW Group and battery supplier Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL) is one of a few EV makers with a fundraising round in train, seeking $500 million.

Others include Leap Motor, backed by state-owned Shanghai Electric Group Corp and Sequoia Capital China, which is seeking $372 million as well as CHJ Automotive, founded by serial entrepreneur Li Xiang, which wants to raise as much as $500 million.

Chechen women go places with female-only taxi service

Checking her blind spot, Fatima Dzhambulatova changes lanes on a busy avenue in Chechnya's capital Grozny. In this Muslim republic of Russia, she is spearheading a women-only taxi service. To get more female taxi, you can visit shine news official website.

At the wheel of a white sedan bearing the bright purple logo "Mekhkari", the name of the service launched this spring, the 49-year-old taxi driver explains the appeal of women drivers in the conservative region.

Some clients have husbands who won't allow them into a car with another man, she says, while some believe women are safer drivers, and others simply prefer riding with a member of the same sex.In the sparse office of Mekhkari, which means "girls" in Chechen, founder Madina Tsakaeva said she got the idea after realising she preferred to ride with female drivers, who were hard to find.

"It was very rare for our city," she said. "So we did a survey on social media about what people thought of the idea of a women-only taxi."The project eventually got financial backing, the amount of which has not been made public, from the Emirates-based Zayed Fund for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which opened a Grozny chapter in 2017.

Libkan Bazayeva, coordinator of Grozny-based women's rights organisation Women For Development, said that the idea for a women-only taxi service in Chechnya had been a long time coming.

"In the Soviet era, you could count the number of women who drove on one hand, the whole republic knew them and their entire life story," she said.n 2008, Women For Development organised free driving courses for about 100 women, half of whom began driving in Grozny.

Traffic policemen in the city of 270,000 were shocked, Bazayeva said, but the campaign proved "infectious" and women behind the wheel are now common. The Zayed fund stressed the value for conservative Muslims of the female-only taxi company, which only takes bookings for women passengers or women travelling with children.

The service "will be very convenient from the point of view of religious norms and traditions," the fund said on its Instagram account in late March, when it made the decision to approve the funding.

After the end of two separatist wars with the Russian government, Chechnya has in recent years seen a resurgence of Islam, encouraged by its leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who has governed the North Caucasus region with an iron fist since 2007.

But it's not only conservative Islamic traditions that compel women in Grozny to use the service: passengers say that they also appreciate what they describe as a less aggressive style of driving."Men drive more erratically, women are more careful. I feel safer with a woman," 29-year-old Kheda Yusaeva said, from the back seat of Dzhambulatova's taxi.

Another reason women might prefer the service is to avoid conflict with their husbands over riding with a male stranger, Bazayeva said, adding that she knew of cases where a man had beaten his wife simply for having a taxi driver's phone number saved in her address book.

Even With a Lion on Its Back, Giraffe Puts Up Epic 5-Hour Fight & Miraculously Escapes

Pretty much everyone is cheering for animals to make a daring escape when a predator attacks some seemingly helpless herbivore. That's a little unfair because a predator has to eat. Nonetheless, you'll probably find yourself cheering for the giraffe in this wild video recently posted to YouTube. To get more lion attack giraffe, you can visit shine news official website.

The above video, filmed at South Africa's Klaserie Game Reserve, is a heart-pounding battle between a giraffe and an entire pride of lions. Following the start of the attack, the giraffe looked like a beleaguered dad on a snow day with kids hanging from its legs and back. Only instead of trying to kill their dad's spirit, these lions were actually trying to kill the giraffe in an exhausting five-hour battle.

The tourists were on a safari with guide Francois Pienaar, who filmed the amazing incident. "On our early morning game drive," he told LatestSightings.com, "we found a pride of sleeping lions, as they usually do. My guests and I were watching them sleep, never expecting I was about to see the best sighting in my guiding career.

"We only spent a couple of minutes with them before they started moving off after their morning nap. Whilst on our way following the lions, they spotted a very old giraffe bull unaware that a pride of lions had their eyes set on him."

The tourists stayed to watch the lions stalk the giraffe. That alone would be an exhilarating sight. However, after 20 minutes, the lions made their move. That's what you see in the video above. Pienaar explains that the battle of wills lasted for five hours. The giraffe fought to shake the lions by attempting to stomp on them before the pride finally gave up and the bull lived to tell the tale.
